Summary form only given. The large-scale deployment of full services access networks (FSANs) can only come to reality if its cost can be low enough. The aim of the FSAN initiative is to establish a set of standard specifications in order to foster volume production of optical equipment and thereby lower its costs. The chosen PON architecture yields a favorable economy for the infrastructure shared costs, with the needed broadband capability.
