Optical fiber sensing networks (OFSNs) have advantages based on the features of optical fibers: long length, low transmission loss, the capability of remote monitoring, corrosion resistance, and availability to remotely monitor exhaustive information distributed over wide areas. The author describes the two main categories of OFSNs, distributed sensing networks and multi-point sensing networks. Several applications of OFSNs relate to diagnosis and monitoring of large structures.
