The identification of features suitable in content based image retrieval is of interest for many researchers. It is well known that the shape is one of the most used features in this field. In this paper a syntactic approach (edge representation based on 4+1 symbols) is used to validate same edge detector. The results show that not all the tested algorithms offer comparable results in terms retrieval effectiveness.
