We have implemented a vehicle and traffic incident warning system. The system is capable of warning drivers of accidents, emergencies, and traffic conditions using a wireless communication system. Wireless communication is accomplished using two distinct wireless data links: a short range, high bandwidth link operating in the 5.8 GHz DSRC band providing ad-hoc networking and multi-hop data packet forwarding, and a long range, low bandwidth link operating in the 220 MHz ITS spectrum allocation providing a centralized base station cellular-like network. The system also provides basic vehicle-to-vehicle communication using short text messaging and JPEG image transmission, and vehicle-to-roadside communication for news, weather, and general traffic alerts.
