In order to facilitate a train position detection and monitoring a wayside facility, we have considered to use passive RFID technology at UHF band. A circular polarized RFID antenna was installed under a fuel cell hybrid powered test railway vehicle and passive RFID tags were installed on sleepers. The railway vehicle needs to operate pantographs at appropriate position for charging batteries. We developed a train position detection system using an on-board RFID reader. We confirmed that the on-board RFID reader can detect the raising and lowering positions of pantograph by reading two RFID tags associated with position and running directions of railway vehicle. The effects of RFID tag orientation and vehicle speed on the reading number of times while the railway vehicle passes the RFID tag were also confirmed. Furthermore, we developed wayside facilities monitoring system using passive contact detection tags and the on-board RFID reader. We succeeded in transmitting power wirelessly from the on-board RFID reader to the passive contact detection tag and receiving contact data while running at 38 km/h. Repeatedly receiving contact data related to the failure information of wayside facilities will be expected to improve maintenance efficiency.
