The Elizabeth River Channel is the southernmost part of the Norfolk Harbor Channel. The Norfolk Harbor Channel joins with the 55-ft Newport News Channel to provide access to the Chesapeake Bay via the 55-ft Thimble Shoal Channel and to the Atlantic Ocean. The U.S. Army Engineer District, Norfolk, has proposed that a portion of the Elizabeth River be deepened to allow deeper drafted ships to use the port. In addition to deepening the channels by 5 ft, the District also proposed to build a turning basin near the Elizabeth River Terminals. These proposed improvements were tested using the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) ship/tow simulator, located in Vicksburg, MS. Docking pilots traveled to WES to operate the model. Effects modeled included currents and two-way traffic.
