This report presents data obtained during prototype tests concerned with the performance of the 110- by 800-ft lock at Barkley Lock and Dam project, Cumberland River, Kentucky. Prototype measurements are continuous records of the following : (a.) pressures at 22 locations in the lock culvert system; (b.) valve opening patterns; (c.) valve leaf pressures and accelerations; (d.) water-surface oscillations and elevation; (e.) hawser forces and motion of a nine-barge tow moored in the lock; (f.) valve-hoist strains and cylinder pressures; (g.) miter gate opening; and (h.) air-vent flow rates. Most of the data were recorded on oscillograph charts; data in which the higher fluctuations were of interest (accelerations, strains, and four pressures) were also recorded on analog magnetic tape. Likewise, much of the data were digitized on paper tape and processed by means of the U. S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station computer time-sharing system; data requiring excessive plotting time were handled by means of batch processing. The results are compared with a previous model study and include information on (a.) prototype instrumentation and testing, (b.) basic lock performance, (c.) effects of various valve opening schedules on air venting, and (d.) the response of a moored tow. The primary conclusions are that the prototype performance had been, for the most part, reasonably predicted in the model study. In particular, there is excellent agreement between the values of maximum hawser forces in the model and in the prototype.
