Lock and Dam No. 13 is proposed for construction in a comparatively straight reach of the Arkansas River at mile 346.5 about 7 miles downstream of Van Buren, Ark. The model investigation was concerned with the study of navigation conditions in the approaches to the lock to determine the effects of the proposed regulating structures on channel development in the reaches upstream and downstream of the structure and with the development of measures required to overcome or minimize the effects of any adverse conditions. An undistorted, semifixed-bed, 1:120-scale model reproduced about 7.4 miles of the Arkansas River and additional bank area. The results of the investigation indicated the need for modifications in the regulating structures to improve navigation conditions through the reaches upstream and downstream of the lock. Navigation conditions in the upper approach should be satisfactory provided, during the higher flows, tows make the turn toward the right bank at a sufficient distance upstream to overcome the effects of currents moving toward the spillway. Downbound tows would experience considerable difficulty in negotiating the bend downstream of the lock during flows which overtop the right bank revetment and dikes. Conditions in the bend and in the crossing downstream can be improved by raising the elevation of the dikes and revetment farther downstream to the head of the crossing. Shoaling can be expected in the lower lock approach as long as there is sediment downstream of the dam. Construction of a wing dike as an extension to the lower guard wall would reduce the frequency of maintenance dredging and could reduce the amount of dredging required.
