The impact of a proposed hydropower modification upon the thermal structure of the Norfork Lake and upon the releases from the proposed reregulation structure was investigated with a one-dimensional numerical model. The numerical simulation model was adapted from previous analyses of pumped-storage projects (Marysville and Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes hydrothermal studies). The approach involved the selection of three study years (1974, 1975, and 1976) and simulation of lake operation for each year both with and without pumped-storage hydropower. The simulations without pumped-storage operations were compared with the existing data bases for the respective years to verify the accuracy of the simulations. Subsequently, the simulations with pumped-storage operations were compared with the simulations with conventional hydropower operations to determine the relative thermal changes both in the reservoir and the release that would have occurred with pumped-storage operations in the respective or similar years.
