PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a charger capable of conveying a possible output current value to an electric vehicle even in a communication protocol that does not use a pilot signal to convey current capacity.SOLUTION: A charger/discharger 10 which is a charger comprises: a communication control unit 191 for establishing a data communication state with an electric vehicle 300 on the basis of the transmission of a communication start signal; and a possible output current value calculation unit 192 for calculating a possible output current value, i.e. the value of current that can be output to the electric vehicle 300. The communication control unit 191 transmits the possible output current value to the electric vehicle 300 after establishing the data communication state with the electric vehicle 300.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
