A method for controlling operation of an engine-driven pitch propeller 14 of a marine propulsion system 10 comprises the steps of determining a reference pitch point and a reference rotational speed point of the propeller as a function of a control input 36 being indicative of a demanded thrust and then determining and setting a pitch set point and a rotational speed set point of the propeller as a function of each one of the reference pitch point and the reference rotational speed point and an actual vessel motion parameter and an actual engine performance parameter. A control unit 24 for carrying out the method with a marine propulsion system is also disclosed.
