A method and system to provide a communication link between an automatic train operation unit (105), in particular a so-called "ATO-OB", of a rail vehicle (100) with a local traffic management system (135) comprising the following steps:• providing a common access point (121), in particular a so-called "APN", and a common switching center (116), in particular a so-called automatic-trainoperation-trackside-unit "ATO-TS",• providing local traffic management systems (135a-d), in particular so-called "TMS", that are configured to communicate with the common switching center;• providing an automatic train operation unit within a rail vehicle that is configured to communicate with the common access point;wherein the automatic train operation unit transmits information at least about its current driving area when communicating with the common access point, wherein the common switching center forwards the communication of the automatic train operation unit to the local traffic management system that corresponds to the current driving area (110).
