A rotor system (108) for an aircraft (100) is described and includes an open rotor assembly (108) comprising a plurality of rotor blades (114) connected to a rotor mast (210); and a drive system (200) for providing rotational energy to the open rotor assembly (108) via the rotor mast (210). The drive system (200) includes at least one electric motor (202) for providing rotational energy to a motor shaft (204); and a gearbox (208) connected to the drive shaft (300) for receiving rotational energy from the at least one electric motor (202) via the motor shaft (204) and providing rotational energy to the rotor mast (210) via a rotor shaft.
