In a railway axle (1) according to this disclosure, a chemical composition of a base metal portion (BM) of a center parallel portion (3) and a pair of fitting portions (2) consists of, in mass%, C: 0.22 to 0.29%, Si: 0.15 to 0.40%, Mn: 0.50 to 0.80%, P: 0.020% or less, S: 0.040% or less, Cr: 0.90 to 1.20%, Mo: 0.15 to 0.30%, N: 0.0200% or less, O: 0.0040% or less, Ca: 0 to 0.0010%, and the balance being Fe and impurities. A ratio of a diameter Dw of the fitting portion (2) to a diameter DA of the center parallel portion (3) is 1.10 to 1.30. A depth Cw of a fitting portion hardened layer (2H) is 2.5 mm to 0.10×DW mm. A ratio of the depth Cw of the fitting portion hardened layer to a depth CA of a center parallel portion hardened layer is 0.34 to 0.93.
