The invention relates to a method for operating a motor vehicle (1), comprising the following steps: checking, by means of a narrow passage assistant (2) of the motor vehicle on the basis of data characterizing dimensions of a narrow passage (7), whether at least one trajectory for collision-free driving through the narrow passage (7) by the motor vehicle (1) can be determined; if no trajectory for collision-free driving through the narrow passage (7) can be determined: outputting a warning message; if at least one trajectory for collision-free driving through the narrow passage (7) has been determined: signaling that travel through the narrow passage (7) is possible, a target driving path being displayed by means of a display device of the motor vehicle (1) in accordance with the determined trajectory, it being possible to drive through the narrow passage (7) without collision so long as the motor vehicle (1) drives within the target driving path. The invention further relates to a motor vehicle (1) having a narrow passage assistant (2).
