The invention relates to a process for automating monitoring of passengers on a passenger movement system (100, 200, 300), comprising the following steps: a) continuously monitoring an area (1, 4) of a first passenger movement system (100, 200, 300), the area (1, 4) being located outside at least one boundary (3) on the passenger movement system (100, 200, 300), the boundary (3) being an entry point or an exit point; b) calculating the number of free and/or occupied spaces (F) within the region (1, 4); c) detecting a risk of overcrowding within the area (1, 4); d) optionally activating a speed change function of the passenger movement system (100, 200, 300); e) issuing a warning signal to the passengers informing them that they should not use the passenger movement system (100, 200, 300).
