A method for adjusting a level of use of a battery pack includes measuring cell sensing data for each respective battery cell using a cell sensing circuit, the cell sensing data including a cell voltage, a current, and a temperature. The method includes processing cell sensing data for each respective battery cell by a plurality of battery state functions of the controller to generate a numerical cell degradation value (CDV). The battery state function is a calibrated relationship of the cell sensing data to a predetermined battery fault condition. Thereafter, the method includes automatically adjusting, via the controller, a usage level of the battery pack based on the numerical CDV during operation of the battery pack. An electric powertrain system includes a battery pack, a cell sensing circuit, a rotating electric machine, and a controller configured to execute the above method.
