AbstractThis paper describes the scientific background for the Darwin mission. Darwin is the element in the European Space Agency’s Cosmic Vision plan dedicated to the direct detection and study of Terrestrial exo-planets. The enabling technique of nulling interferometry is explained, and the current model mission is described. The envisaged implementation plan is outlined.
