Abstract The dynamic clustering method based on both spectral and spatial information of the geostationary satellite VIS and IR imagery is put forward to sort different cloud types into a classified image. A Fourier Phase Difference (FPD) technique for cloud motion estimation of each cloud type from pair of classified images is described. Results from both artificial and real cloud imagery show that the FPD technique is sensitive to the presence of mixture of cloud motions and has relatively good effect to each cloud type. Test results indicate that the technique has the perspective in operational application to obtain the cloud motion vectors from the geosynchronous satellite data.
