This paper presents a couple of prototype Intelligent Transport System (ITS) applications for some large European cities based on Probe Vehicle Data (PVD) of taxi-fleets. First of all, the PVD are used to monitor the current traffic conditions in urban areas. Areas of congested traffic can be easily identified and traffic jams can be highlighted on time. Another prototype application is a route guidance and dynamic navigation system based on current and historical road segment travel times. First experiences with Berlin, Munich, Nuremberg, Stuttgart and Vienna implementations based on taxi-PVD demonstrate that the integration of this type of data source in traffic management systems could greatly improve the quality of ITS applications in urban areas. Individual and collective routing information will be enhanced by more reliable travel time information. Finally, the paper presents an attempt to derive digital road maps an automatically generated road map of a designated city area will be given.
