Use of furfural as acetalization agent in place of formaldehyde is of special interest in relation to production of fibers with special properties; toxicity of process may be reduced by use of furfural since maximum permissible concentration of furfural in air is 10 times that of formaldehyde; degree of acetalization increases with increasing furfural content in bath, but increase of furfural concentration above 4% leads to formation of hard fibers; acetalization of PVA fibers by furfural takes 40 to 60 min in practice.
