Comparison is made of effects on visibility of otherwise unlit objects of four types of vehicle lighting used by drivers in lighted streets; observers were driven at 30 mph in car along straight well-lit track toward stationary opposing vehicle showing same type of lighting; 4 ft high target was placed at various positions on track between 400 ft ahead of and 300 ft behind opposing lights; distances were measured at which each of six observers positively detected target, and recognized orientation of small projection on top of target.
