Study was carried out in Calgary, Alta, to clarify functional nature of commercial ribbons from point of view of traffic planning; all linear commercial developments were mapped and from total array of ribbons present in city three were selected for detailed study; one ribbon was north-south radial, one tangential within 1/2 mi of edge of central business district (CBD), and third further tangential, at its nearest point 1 1/2 mi from CBD; latter tangential is part of Trans-Canada Highway and consequently carries significant volume of through traffic.
