In transporting coal, railroads are performing fast, dependable movement of high volume traffic at low cost; 643,000 coal cars have capacity of 40,000,000 tons; new equipment provides faster service, greater volume and improved control; more economical operations are being sought; rate adjustments protect coal markets from competition with other fuels; integral trains can haul coal and other bulk commodities in tonnage volume several times capacity of present freight trains; new high capacity cars are being built.
