High performance, efficiency, and integrity demanded in advanced aerospace materials applications frequently required metallurgical joining of aluminum alloys to stainless steels; advances in joining techniques developed at North American Aviation's Space and Information Systems Div in support of major space programs include salt-bath dip brazing and various plating techniques which are described together with advantages and limitations of methods; research efforts carried out such as friction welding, which appears promising for joining aluminum to stainless steel, are also described.
