Composite values for coarseness, fiber diameter, wall thickness, and fibers/gram can be derived from measurement of fibers/sq mm, specific gravity, solid fraction, and fiber length; coarser fibers give less uniformity of paper formation than finer fibers of similar length; fiber coarseness has important effects upon tensile strength, tear factor, and sheet density; methods of determination of coarseness in wood and pulp.
