Use of specially designed copper backing bar and conventional automatic welding machine for good uniform reverse-side beads throughout lengths of 15 m, in butt welding ship plates of 38 mm thickness from one side only; characteristics of copper backing, mechanism of reverse side beads and properties of welded joints; need for turning over large flat sections of ship hull structures is eliminated in this process.
