If American Bureau of Shipping issues specifications in 1966 covering higher strength steels (47,000 psi yield point, 71,000 psi tensile strength range), rules will also require revision to provide design guidance, although tentative criteria exist; to illustrate economy that may be achieved, midship section of typical coastal tanker is designed on stress basis using rational design criteria, and compared with midship sections of same vessel designed in medium-strength steel to ABS rules and designed in higher strength steel using ABS criteria.
