Infrared spectra of pyrolysis products of 15 different synthetic fibers were examined and compared to internal reflection spectra of fibers; information was obtained, from both vapor and condensed phases of pyrolysis products, to qualitatively classify or identify fibers; characteristics of thermal degradation of polymers.
