Paper attempts to survey significance of program fatigue testing in vehicle and aircraft construction, undertaken at Laboratorium fuer Betriebsfestigkeit, Darmstadt-Eberstadt, West Germany; example of stub axle is selected to demonstrate operational stresses experienced; operational strength tests carried out with stub axles; details of arrangement of test load spectrum; evaluation of program fatigue tests; effect on service life of variations in design and materials.
