Advantages of gray cast iron as automotive cylinder block material over aluminum are discussed in terms of cost, wear resistance, strain-stress tolerance, castability, corrosion resistance in aqueous coolant systems, damping characteristics, and commercial considerations; future of gray iron for cylinder blocks is reviewed.
