C-5A heavy logistics support aircraft program is currently in project definition phase, in which three companies (Boeing, Douglas, and Lockheed) are engaged in airframe competition and two companies (Gen Elec and Pratt and Whitney) in engine competition; system description of aircraft which will have design gross weight of about 675,000 to 725,000 lb and will be able to take off in 8000 ft on sea level hot day; C-5A will be powered by four new high-bypass ratio turbofan engines of 40,000 lb thrust.
