Manchester and Altrincham Railway, after 80 yr. of steam working, is changed over to electric traction; density of traffic necessitated sectional area of overhead conductor equivalent to 0.85 sq. in. of copper; this construction is, so far, heaviest in Europe; rolling stock manufactured by General Electric Co.; motor coaches have two d. c. series-wound 328-hp., 750-volt motors (connected in series) on each of their two trucks; schematic diagram of control circuits.
