Difficulties encountered between theoretical hydrodynamics and practical ship design are dealt with in first part of paper; second part deals with experimental study of fluid motion, and possiblity of reducing existing gap between hydrodynamics and its engineering application; concludes that theoretical hydrodynamics in its present state cannot be self-directing unless experiment gives lead.
