Study to determine cost of motor vehicle accidents and incidents occurring in Washington Metropolitan Area during 12-mo period involving Washington area residents; analysis of accident frequencies and costs related to pertinent variables of highway vehicle, driver, environment, and traffic operations; only 0.3% of total were classified as fatal injury involvements, and these averaged over $47,000/case; nonfatal injury involvements averaged $863/case; almost 70% of cases involved property damage only and averaged $193/case; overall average cost was $527/vehicle involvement; data collected in this study can be used to quantify accident cost savings to be expected from specific improvements.
