During the reign of Charles II, the Spanish Monarchy tried to counteract the decline in the number of its maritime forces. To this end, it resorted to the joint defense of its dominions through the union of the Mediterranean fleets and the Armada del Mar Océano. In this sense, the galleys of the Kingdom of Sicily contributed, like the rest of the Monarchy’s naval forces, to the defense of the Spanish dominions. Although they avoided direct confrontation with the French navy, they carried out other very important tasks, such as transporting Spanish officers, troops, money, supplies and provisions, providing aid to North African cities, as well as supporting communications between the different dominions in the Mediterranean.
