The use of magnesium (Mg) and its alloys in the biomedical field is known since 1878 when the physician Edward Huse successfully applied magnesium wires as ligature in the human body to stop bleeding vessels. Due to its biodegradability, magnesium is a convenient choice as temporary bone replacement since it waives the need to remove the implant after the bone has healed. This, in turn, reduces the risks and trauma of a second surgery to the patient as well as the associated healthcare costs. Due to its fast corrosion and subsequent strong hydrogen evolution in contact with body fluids, however, the clinical applications of Mg are currently limited. Mg and its alloys can be coated to reduce their fast corrosion, hydrogen evolution and the associated formation of undesired gas cavities. In addition to protecting the substrate, the coating may also be used to add extra functionalities such as bioactivity, drug delivery capability, and/or antibacterial behavior. One coating method for biomaterials is electrophoretic deposition (EPD), which is a costefficient, room-temperature single-step coating technique being increasingly considered for biomedical coatings. EPD can be applied for both planar and complex geometries at room temperature and the coating thickness and homogeneity can be controlled by varying the process parameters. In this work, the Mg alloy WE43 containing 4 wt% yttrium and 3 wt% neodymium was used as substrate material. WE43 was chosen as this alloy was already successfully applied as cardio vascular stents and bone screws in in vivo experiments [1-3]. The material was pretreated with Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) and coated with the natural polymer chitosan incorporating inorganic particles using EPD. Chitosan was chosen as organic matrix material because it is biocompatible, biodegradable and non-toxic. Inorganic particles in particular from bioactive glass (BG) with 45S5 composition, silica and Cu-doped bioactive glass (Cu-BAG), were chosen as filler materials. BG imparts bioactive ...
