Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a modern public transport system with many good qualities, such as high efficiency and low power consumption. There currently are six BRT routes in Jinan, which form a "two horizontals and three verticals" BRT network. In this paper, on the basis of second-criterion velocity and actual fuel consumption data from a vehicle traveling data recorder, traveling speed characteristics and fuel consumption characteristics were analyzed. The cumulative frequency distribution curves of vehicle speed and fuel consumption were determined, which are helpful to the appraisal of bus drivers for a bus company. The relationship between traveling speed and fuel consumption in the Jinan BRT system also was studied. The results showed that the mean value of traveling speed is about 18.10 km/h, which fits well with official data. Fuel consumption is decreased while velocity speeds up. The fuel consumption of an 18-meter vehicle is higher than that of a 12-meter vehicle for the same traveling speed. The practical fuel consumption is quite different for various BRT lines because of the different passenger capacity and road condition.
