Geologists have been in the vanguard of research aimed at applying remotely sensed imagery in the search for mineral resources since the first Landsat satellite was launched in 1972. Since then, each advancement of imaging sensor technology introduced new capabilities and brought further refinement of technique. By the end of this decade, the next generation of resource satellites will begin providing geologists with global coverage of diverse data types at spatial and spectral resolutions now available only from airborne sensors. In order to meet the challenges of locating new mineral deposits in less than ideal environments, geoscientists are developing new and innovative approaches to the practical application of remote sensing imagery.
