A prototype of traffic flow monitoring system based on vehicle wireless communication module was put forward. Each moving vehicle equipped with wireless communication module in this system was regarded as a moving sensor to acquire traffic information with low cost. On this basis, one concrete application was proposed: a base station detects the vehicle with wireless communication module, and estimates the traffic volume through adaptive Kalman filtering based on the feedback of estimation result. A simulation platform based on cellular automata was established and the effectiveness of the estimation algorithm was confirmed as well.
