Throughout the course of history, man's ability to view earth as a planet has dramatically changed. With the aid of satellites, he has been able to see earth as a whole rather than in disjointed pieces. The study of the ozone layer, in particular, has benefitted from this broader view of the earth. Through special sensors attached to spacecraft, experiments that were impossible before satellite technology are now a routine and essential part of ozone studies. The Nimbus-7 satellite provided maps of ozone layer depletion using a especial instrument on board. Another of NASA's missions involved the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) which carried a Microwave Limb Sounder. Using microwave spectral regions, this sensor conducted experiments to measure reactants which break down the ozone layer.
