This paper draws upon the authors' experience to describe the unusual challenges and opportunities which have to be faced in Port Maintenance. In particular, the paper refers to the study of Port Maintenance in South Africa which was undertaken by T. Mneney in 2008. In that study the maintenance performance in South African Ports was compared with that experienced in some Western European ports. Several recommendations for improvement were made. This paper summarizes key aspects of international best practice in port maintenance. It concludes with observations of how ports around the world could best review their own performance and strive for continuous improvement.
