Lane-changing (LC) behavior is an important aspect of driving behavior for autonomous vehicles (AVs). However, very little research has been carried out to investigate the entire LC behavior in a mixed environment with both AVs and human-driven vehicles. Therefore, this paper aims to make some efforts for the gap. To be specific, LC demands are distinguished for traveling demands and driving demands in light of the typical LC scenes. Hereafter, a classification of the behavior into: (i) necessary lane-changing (NLC), (ii) desired lane-changing (DLC), and (iii) optional lane-changing (OLC) is proposed referring to demands urgency. Finally, the other processes from target lane selection to LC execution under different demands are analyzed. This study can provide a design basis for the safe and efficient LC operation of AVs.
