Transportation of goods on the streets constitutes a great problem in the development of Germany's economy, especially in congested areas with high density of population and buildings. Cities are threatened by traffic collapse due to the fact that the number of motor vehicles increases much faster than the capacity of the street network. On the other hand, just-in-time delivery from producers to the processing industry becomes more and more important. Due to the lack of efficiency, the traffic systems including streets, railways, waterways and aircraft are not able to render trouble-free, safe and non-polluting services. Therefore it becomes necessary to look for new ways of fast, flexible and on-time handling of traffic processes as well as to create non-polluting transportation capacities. This requires solutions of a sustainable development nature fulfilling the needs of the presence without restricting the possibilities of future generations and forcing them to steadily develop new ways of transportation. One possible solution of this problem may be the transportation of packaged goods via underground pipeline systems. During the last 5 years the Ruhr-University Bochum executed a study of feasibility about this possibility of freight transportation under the interdisciplinary research project "Underground Transportation and Supply Systems" consisting of the disciplines Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Control Techniques, Law, Economics and Civil Engineering. The result of these studies is the concept "CargoCap" which is devised as an independent and efficient system, fulfilling operational profitability demands that can be expanded with ease. It can be set up quickly in technical terms without violating public interests and coordinating with traditional transportation systems and logistics concepts without any problems. Thus CargoCap represents the fifth transportation alternative to the traditional transportation systems.
