In order to research the relationship between the development of the highway and road freight and to analyze the influence of highway classification on road freight, qualitative and quantitative research is accomplished to measure the impact extent on road freight from different highway grades, by applying the methods of path analysis according to the comparative advantage theory. It is emphasized that the development of high-grade highway is the predominant factor in the constraints of road freight. Simultaneously, low-grade highway contributes to road freight through high-grade highway as well, in respect that the collector-distributor function of low-grade highway is mutually restricted by the across function of high-grade highway. This result indicates that on the behalf of road freight, investments should be maintained in the construction of high-grade highway and at the same time, the rational distribution of highway should be improved.
