At present, cycle tracks have been constructed or are under planning/construction in different locations throughout the New Territories in Hong Kong. The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) proposed to connect scattered cycle, tracks in various districts in the New Territories to form New Territories Cycle Track Networks with a view to enhancing recreational and tourism values. Upon completion, there will be a continuous cycle track connecting Shatin, Tai Po, Fanling/Sheung Shui, Yuen Long, Tin Shui Wai and Tuen Mun together with necessary supporting facilities. In view of the considerable length and costs involved for the proposed cycle track network, it has been proposed to implement the network in two phases, the priority phase and the long term phase. This paper will focus on four aspects: 1) the review, planning, design and construction considerations for the proposed cycle track network; 2) the application of environmental friendly materials; 3) the contract strategy of cycle track network with supporting facilities; and, last but not the least, 4) the project impacts to the social, economic and sustainable development.
