In this paper, the sideslip mechanism of a semi-trailer combination vehicle operating on curved downslope expressway segments was investigated. By collecting the data on roadway design and the vehicle, several typical scenarios were developed by TruckSim to simulate the influence of roadway geometrics, speeds, and loading levels on sideslip of the semi-trailer combination vehicle. Side friction factor was selected as the indicator to measure the risk of sideslip. The regression model of side friction factor was established by SPSS software. Based on the critical stable state of the vehicle, the operation safety of semi-trailer combination vehicle under different rainfall intensities were analyzed. The results showed that under different rainfall intensities, the semi-trailer combination vehicle can operate in a stable state at 80 km/h, but when the speed reaches 90 km/h, the sideslip occurs. Research results can provide the technical support for a more reasonable safety evaluation method for the semi-trailer combination vehicle on curved downslope expressway segments.
