Items in pavement condition survey normally include surface distresses, such as cracking, rutting, and other surface defects. The paper presents the most recent findings on the feasibility study to conduct comprehensive survey of pavement condition through the use of stereovision technology. The existing Digital Highway Data Vehicle (DHDV) is equipped with multiple high-resolution digital cameras and related new equipment. It has been shown that it is possible to establish three-dimensional (3D) surface model of pavements for the entire pavement lane-width so that comprehensive condition information can be extracted from 3D surface model of pavements. Previous efforts in developing 3D surface models of pavements are also discussed in the paper. The paper concludes that a number of challenges remain in the implementation of such technology for field application.
