A great number of long steep grades exist in the Chinese mountain railway. For example, Xi’an-Chengdu high-speed railway has more than 20 steep grades with gradients larger than 1.5%. The designed Sichuan-Tibet railway has a steep grade with a gradient of 3% and a length of 70km. Therefore, long-time and high-class electric braking will be applied when the high-speed trains pass through these severe grades, which may cause a higher braking failure risky. This paper presents a study of the effects of braking failure on the dynamic performance of high-speed railway vehicles when the train passes through these severe zones. Considering the train-track coupling interaction and the influence of track grade, a numerical model is established to study the effects of braking failure conditions on the dynamic performance of high-speed railway vehicles. The influence of the circular curve of the track is investigated as well. To better simulate the combined effects of braking failure, the model takes the coupler, the inter-vehicle components into account. The results show that the electric braking failure causes a significant increase of the train speed accompanied by intense in-train forces. The dynamic performance of the train under braking failure conditions is almost consistent with that under normal conditions.
