Bus lanes have played an important role in improving the operation of urban public transportation. However, the operation of dedicated bus lanes is still far from satisfactory. Therefore, understanding the factors affecting bus lane operation can help to improve the efficiency of urban public transportation. Traditionally, problems affecting bus lane operations have been attributed to factors within the transportation system itself; however, other factors may affect the efficiency and operation as well. This paper used data related to the infrastructure within the transportation system as well as data from the urban built environment to evaluate bus lane operation in Shanghai, China. Key factors affecting operation were identified and then, the C5.0 decision tree algorithm was used to divide the bus lanes into 8 types according to the aforementioned indicators. Conclusions showed that the transportation infrastructure has a greater influence on bus lane operations than the surrounding urban built environment.
